Nigeria: Senate C'ttee Insists On Resolution of NFA/NFL Dispute - AllAfrica.com

The contention trailing the defense mechanism of the 2008 budget estimations by the National Sports Committee (NSC) yesterday continued unabated as the Senate Committee on Sports again postponed deliberations on the substance till Monday to enable members survey fresh written documents submitted by NSC.

The committee, which appeared bent on resolving the difference between the Federal Republic Of Federal Republic Of Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and the Nigeria Football League (NFL) before legal proceeding with concluding consideration of the athletics budget, appointed a sub-committee made up of four of its members look into the substance and study back on Monday.

Addressing the gathering, the President of the Sports Committee on Sports, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri said the commission is ready to do any forfeit that is needed to raise the nation's athletics development to higher heights.

While expressing discouragement at the late reaching of the National Security Council President Abdulrahman Hassan Gimba and his squad to the sitting, Lokpobiri said it was because of the importance attached to athletics sector that members decided to wait and forfeit their time.

The sub-committee, headed by Mr. Solomon Ganiyu, have other member as Mr. Osita Izunaso, former Governor of Yobe State, Alhaji Abba Bukka Ibrahim and Mr. Joel Danlamin, is to liaise with the National Security Council President over the issue.

The sub-committee is to see to the colony of the NFA/NFL issue before the adjacent sitting.

"They are to liaise with the Minister, the Director-General of NSC, NFA and NFL functionaries so that it can describe back its determinations to us on Monday," he said.

Lokogbiri also requested the National Security Council President to supply the commission with comprehensive information of the 2008 athletics calendar on or before the Monday meeting.

Gimba, who arrived late at the meeting because of a similar battle with the House of Representatives Committee on Sports earlier, told the commission that the commission have come up with the additional information on its 2007 budget public presentation index and gross coevals profile.

He said the commission have set forward a budget proposal of N5.3 billion for the 2008 financial year.

Gimba said the commission have articulated its position well adequate in the entries made to the committee and would stand up by them, adding: "What was captured in the presentations contained all the commission's input signals with respect to the 2008 appropriation Bill."

However, owing to the late entry of the written documents to the committee at the resumed sitting yesterday, the Senators resolved to prorogue additional consideration till Monday to enable them to travel through the new information
