Green, Monk Lead Inductees for Football Hall of Fame (Update1)

Former American Capital Redskins cornerback
Darrell Green and broad receiving system Art Monk were among six players
elected into the Pro Football Hallway of Fame.

Also selected were defensive end Fred Dean, offensive
tackle Gary Zimmerman, line backer Andre Tippett and cornerback
Emmitt Thomas. They were chosen from 17 finalists by the Hallway of
Fame's choice commission at the Superintendent Bowl in Phoenix, and
will be inducted in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 2.

Green was the lone inductee in his first twelvemonth of
eligibility, while the five others had previously been finalists.

Former National Football League Commissioner Alice Paul Tagliabue
wasn't elected for the 2nd consecutive year, while the others
who failed to derive admittance were receiving systems Cris Howard Carter and
Andre Reed; defensive end Richard Dent; line backers Randy
Gradishar and Derrick Thomas; violative linemen Russ Grimm, Bob
Kuechenberg and Randall McDaniel; and punter Beam Guy.

Seth Thomas and Windy City Cardinals running back E. G. Marshall Goldberg
were added as finalists by the Seniors Committee.

Green, who played his full 20-year career with the
Redskins through 2002, was a seven-time Professional Bowl selection. The
47-year-old had 54 calling interceptions, returning six for
touchdowns, and throws the NFL record with 19 consecutive old age with
an interception.

''Me? How did I acquire here?'' Green asked at a news
conference announcing the initiation results.

Records

Monk, who spent 14 seasons with American Capital from 1980-93
before single old age with the New House Of York Jets and Philadelphia, had
940 catches for 12,271 paces and 68 touchdowns. The 50-year-old
had an NFL single-season record 106 responses in 1984, while
also setting a former conference grade with 164 consecutive games with a
catch and in calling receptions.

''I really wasn't expecting this even with the possibility
of it,'' Monk -- who was picked in his 8th twelvemonth of being a
finalist -- said in a teleconference. ''I'm greatly humbled.''

Green and Monk, who was a three-time Professional Bowl selection,
were teammates on two Superintendent Bowl-winning teams, while Monk was
also portion of the 1982 NFL title-holder Redskins.

Dean played with San Diego and San Francisco from 1975-85,
was a two-time Pro Bowl choice and had a calling poke total
near 100, as pokes weren't an functionary NFL statistic until 1982. The 55-year-old had a career-high 17.5 sacks in 1983, including
a then NFL-record 6 in a Nov. Thirteen game against New Orleans.

Defenders

Seth Thomas played with Sunflower State City from 1966-78 and is the
franchise's all-time leader with 58 interceptions, which are
ninth-most in NFL history. The 64-year-old had 12 interceptions
in 1974 -- two diffident of the NFL record -- and was a five-time Pro
Bowl pick.

Tippett made five Pro bowl visual aspects while playing with
New England from 1982-93. The 48-year-old had a team-record 18.5
sacks in 1984 and his 100 calling pokes and 17 opposition fumbles
recovered were Patriots' marks.

Zimmerman was a seven-time Professional Bowl choice with
Minnesota and Mile-High City from 1986-97. The 46-year-old played with
Los Angeles of the old U.S. Football League for two seasons
before joining the Vikings and started 169 consecutive games
through 1996.
